Real Butterfly Wing Earrings ~ Wild Alberta Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly Wings
These amazing REAL Tiger Swallowtail wings were sustainably sourced according to our Metis tradition on the south shores of Slave Lake in northern Alberta, Canada.
These are male butterflies - we know this because the males are the only ones in this species who "puddles" - they land in the damp sand on my lake lot and "sip" the minerals out of the water. They need these minerals in order to mate successfully. Sadly, many of these beautiful creatures are too depleted and end up dying in the sand before they can mate. I salvage a few of them each spring to make these stunning earrings and leave the rest for the hungry seagulls. It may sound harsh, but it is the natural way, and as Metis we are taught to use all of the gifts the Creator sends us.
I allow the butterflies to dry naturally over the winter and make my earrings in the spring to honour the new crop of butterflies. Their flight is from May to July here in northern Alberta, a very short lifespan that I recognize and honour for both the beauty they bring to us humans, but also for the sustenance they provide for the birds. The great circle of life continues. You can see how fragile these are in that some of the wings are missing pieces, either from being damaged in flight or from birds pecking them.
These earrings are suspended from hypoallergenic 14k gold plated stainless steel earwires. The accent beads are agate stones, and I have preserved the wings in a coat of clear resin with a parchment backing for added strength.
Each pair is different because they are REAL, not silk wings or farmed butterflies - these are WILD Alberta Tiger Swallowtails. Due to this fact they are a limited edition each year. This year I only have 8 pair on offer.
Each pair comes gift boxed.
**NOTE: I am a real person who handcrafted each and every piece myself from design to completion. I process orders as they are purchased, so, depending on the size of my work que (how many orders ahead of yours) it can take me between 2 days to 2 weeks to create and ship your piece to you. I thank you in advance for your understanding of what truly handmade means and I appreciate your business.
