Honouring Indigenous Veterans: Courage, Sacrifice & How You Can Help Today

Every November 8, Canada observes Indigenous Veterans Day — a dedicated day set apart to recognize the extraordinary and often overlooked service of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples who fought for this country long before this country fully recognized their rights.

A Legacy Written in Service

Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War in disproportionately high numbers relative to their population. They served as sharpshooters, soldiers, and code talkers — crossing oceans to defend a nation that, upon many of their returns, still denied them full citizenship rights and excluded them from veterans' benefits.

Their courage was immense. Their sacrifice was real. Their stories have too often gone untold.

Why November 8?

Indigenous Veterans Day falls on November 8 — before Remembrance Day — as a deliberate act of recognition. It ensures Indigenous veterans receive their own dedicated ceremony and space, honouring the distinct experiences and unique sacrifices of their communities and families.

Culture as Resistance, Culture as Resilience

Even as assimilationist policies worked to erase Indigenous language, ceremony, and identity, the traditions survived. The beadwork. The regalia. The stories passed hand to hand, generation to generation. Indigenous veterans fought abroad while their cultures were being fought against at home — and yet both endured.

At Blue World Treasures, every piece we create is rooted in that same spirit of cultural continuity. We bead with purpose. We create with memory.

Wear Your Honour — and Give Back

This November 8, we invite you to carry that legacy forward with our Beaded Poppy Pin: Support Indigenous Youth Scholarships — a handcrafted beaded poppy that honours Indigenous veterans while directly funding scholarships for Indigenous youth.

Because the best way to honour those who sacrificed for the next generation is to invest in the next generation.
